At approximately 9:38 p.m. on a spring evening in 1992, agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), looking for evidence of illegal wiretapping, executed a search warrant at the home of Eddie L. Cole, Jr. (Cole). Cole, his wife, and their three children lived in a small town in rural Nebraska where Cole was and is manager of the local telephone company.
