On November 1, 1994, Barbara Tavel-Lipnick ("Mrs. Tavel-Lipnick" or "daughter"), guardian of the person for her mother, Charlotte Tavel ("Mrs. Tavel" or "mother"), filed a petition in the Court of Chancery. The petition requested authorization to remove a feeding tube from her mother so that her mother would be allowed to die.
