In October 1986, plaintiff, Jesse James Johnson, was commissioned as an auxiliary deputy by West Carroll Parish Sheriff Gary Bennett. Shortly thereafter, on January 2, 1987, plaintiff sustained serious knee injuries while assisting in the arrest of a man wanted for writing bad checks.
