This case comes to us with the following factual and procedural background: Defendant Riddle and Mendenhall Logging (R & M) is a self-insured employer engaged in cutting and hauling timber. R & M contracted with the decedent, John Christian, to haul logs and pulpwood for a fixed amount per ton.
