WHICHARD, Justice.

On 26 August 1989, Detective McDonald Vick, a Durham police officer, was providing security during his off hours for the Washington-Duke Hotel, which is located on the campus of Duke University. He testified at plaintiff's civil trial in this case that at approximately 5:00 a.m. on August 26th, he observed plaintiff's vehicle enter Science Drive. From his location in the hotel parking lot, he watched plaintiff's vehicle enter the Duke Faculty Club...
