The defendant appeals1 from the judgment of conviction, rendered after a jury trial, of murder in violation of General Statutes § 53a-54a (a).2 On appeal, the defendant claims that the trial court improperly (1) refused to instruct the jury on self-defense, (2) prohibited him from offering evidence of prior criminal misconduct of the victim and two state's witnesses,
