In these consolidated appeals, Lawrence B. Smith, counsel for plaintiffs Richard X. Knipe, Glenn A. Valentine and Bernard C. Ford, appeals from two decisions by Chief Judge McAvoy sanctioning Smith pursuant to Fed.R.Civ.P. 11. In Knipe v. Skinner, 146 F.R.D. 58 (N.D.N.Y.1993), the district court concluded that Smith had violated Rule 11 by filing a complaint that was not warranted by existing law...
