The appellant, Jon Melvin Sorrells, was charged with two counts of attempted murder. He was found guilty in a jury trial of the lesser-included offenses of assault in the second degree and attempted assault in the second degree. On March 31, 1993, he was sentenced to 7 years' imprisonment in the penitentiary on the assault conviction and to 12 months' imprisonment in the county jail on the attempted assault conviction.
