On June 1, 1989, Jamie Moore went to the emergency room of the University of Cincinnati Hospital ("University Hospital") and was diagnosed as having an exacerbation of his asthma. Moore was twenty-five years old and had sickle cell beta plus thalassemia, a comparatively mild form of sickle cell disease.
