On 10 February 1992, Carl F. Blackman, Sr., suffered a brain aneurysm and was admitted to the cardiac unit of Wake Medical Center in Raleigh, North Carolina. Nine days later, plaintiff Laymon L. Lewis was injured when the vehicle he was driving was struck by an automobile owned by Carl F. Blackman and driven by his wife, Gladys H. Blackman.
