After several unsuccessful business ventures between 1983 and 1989 with her husband Ken Lai (Lai), Amy Kam-Ling Wong (Wong) sought relief in bankruptcy from her debts. During the bankruptcy proceeding she claimed her homestead with a value of $48,000 as exempt property.
