In 1981, a jury in the circuit court of St. Clair County, Illinois convicted the petitioner, Lee Otis Griffin ("Griffin") of three counts of murder and one count of armed violence. He was sentenced to three concurrent terms of 40 years for the murder convictions and one concurrent term of 30 years for the armed violence conviction.
