HOWE, Justice:

The State of Utah, the Utah Department of Corrections, and Adult Probation and Parole (the "state defendants") appeal from a judgment entered on a jury verdict awarding plaintiff Laurie Malcolm $134,000 in damages.1 In reviewing a jury verdict, we "view the evidence and all reasonable inferences drawn therefrom in a light most favorable to the verdict." State v. Dunn, 850 P.2d 1201
