On September 4, 1992, the appellant, Doies Lee Alford, Jr., was indicted for the offense of assault in the second degree. The indictment reads, in pertinent part, as follows:

"The Grand Jury of said County charges that ... Doies Lee Alford, Jr.... did with intent to cause physical injury to another person, cause physical injury to Annette Ledbetter, by means of a deadly weapon or a dangerous instrument...
