TJOFLAT, Chief Judge:

Bernard Bolender is a Florida prison inmate. In 1980, a jury convicted him of four counts of first degree murder, four counts of kidnapping, and four counts of armed robbery for torturing and slaying four alleged drug dealers. The jury unanimously recommended a sentence of life imprisonment for each murder, but the trial court overrode that recommendation and sentenced Bolender to death for the murder convictions and to consecutive life sentences...
