Corky Joe Maurer was convicted, after a 1991 Minnesota jury trial, of criminal sexual conduct of the third degree and sentenced to 48 months imprisonment. He appealed to the Minnesota Court of Appeals, arguing that the victim's witnesses were allowed to vouch for her sincerity, and that such vouching had deprived him of a fair trial.
