Justice McLAREN delivered the opinion of the court:

Following a jury trial, the defendant, Ethel B. Lewis, was convicted of the offense of unlawful delivery of a controlled substance (cocaine). (Ill.Rev.Stat.1987, ch. 56½, par. 1401(c) (now codified, as amended, at 720 ILCS 570/401 (West 1992)).) She was sentenced to a term of 30 months' probation with the condition that she perform 100 hours of public service each year of probation...
