Plaintiff Robert McAdams, a long-time employee of defendant United Parcel Service, Inc. (UPS), was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 1986. He took ten weeks off, then returned to work. In November 1987 a UPS physician, Dr. Downs, put McAdams on an eight-hour day/five-day week work restriction. If problems such as a flare-up of his MS arose, he was to cut back to 4 hours/ day.
