Following a bench trial, defendant, Roland Thompson, was convicted of the February 23, 1973, murder (Ill.Rev.Stat.1973, ch. 38, par. 9-1(a)(1) (now codified as 720 ILCS 5/9-1(a)(1) (West 1992))) of Jack Akins. After defendant elected to be sentenced under the sentencing provisions in effect at the time of the murder, he was sentenced to an indeterminate term of 25 to 75 years' imprisonment.
