On appeal, the defendant, Silas Harris, raises the issue of the sufficiency of the evidence to convict him. He also raises two other issues arising from the trial court's rulings during the course of his criminal trial. The defendant was charged in a substitute information with two counts of assault in the first degree in violation of General Statutes (Rev. to 1989) § 53a-59 (a) (1) and (3),
