The defendant, Carl E. Williams, was indicted for the February 15, 1979 armed robbery of a jewelry store, convicted by a jury of the offense in November 1979, and subsequently sentenced to life in prison. On December 9, 1991, 12 years after his conviction and imposition of sentence, the defendant petitioned the Superior Court of Irwin County, the county in which the robbery occurred, to set aside his life sentence.
