On February 6, 1990, James Craig Mail was charged by information with the first degree assault of his girlfriend, Della Brouillet. As a result of a plea agreement, an amended information was filed on May 3, 1990, charging Mail with attempted assault in the first degree to which he entered an Alford plea. See North Carolina v.
