A jury found defendant Terry Williams guilty of first degree murder (Ill.Rev.Stat. 1989, ch. 38, par. 9-1, now codified as 720 ILCS 5/9-1 (West 1992)) and he was later sentenced to 40 years in the custody of the Illinois Department of Corrections. On appeal, he contends that (1) the State purposely utilized its peremptory challenges during voir dire to discriminate against blacks and exclude them from the jury...
