This case arises from a collision between a private car and a sheriff's vehicle in St. Charles Parish. A bifurcated trial was held in which the plaintiffs' claims against the sheriff's insurer were tried before a jury, while claims against the St. Charles Parish Sheriff, a sheriff's deputy, and the Sheriff's Office were tried before a judge in a simultaneous proceeding.
