A jury convicted the defendant of murder in the first degree, unlawful possession of a sawed-off shotgun, and use of a shotgun while committing a felony. On the defendant's motion, the judge reduced the murder verdict to murder in the second degree, and sentenced the defendant to a mandatory term of life imprisonment. See Mass. R. Crim.
