Justice SCARIANO delivered the opinion of the court:

Defendant Tyrone Jackson was arrested on February 24, 1987, and subsequently charged by indictment with one count of murder and one count of armed violence for events occurring on November 22, 1986. The State eventually nolle-prossed the latter count, and a jury later found defendant guilty of the remaining offense of murder.
