1990 was an election year for sheriff of Price County in Wisconsin. Wayne Wirsing, who had served as Price County sheriff since 1986, was running against deputy sheriff Richard Heitkamper. Jeffrey Heideman, a deputy who joined the department on January 8, 1990, was backing Heitkamper.
