Justice BRESLIN delivered the opinion of the court:

The defendant was charged with the April 7, 1979, murders of two police officers and a civilian. Following a jury trial, he was convicted of all three counts and was sentenced to death. On direct appeal to the Illinois Supreme Court, his convictions were reversed and the cause was remanded for a new trial. (People v. Lampkin (1983), 98 Ill.2d 418, 75 Ill.Dec. 260,
