KEENAN, Justice.
In this appeal, we consider whether the trial court erred in concluding that it lacked jurisdiction to grant a stay of execution to a prisoner who had exhausted his remedy of direct appeal and had requested court-appointed counsel under Code § 19.2-163.7, but had not filed a petition for writ of habeas corpus.
