Part of Sterling Smith's New Year's Eve celebration included randomly firing a .44 calibre pistol. In the process he shot and killed a neighboring partygoer, Robert Knight. An Indiana jury convicted Smith of involuntary manslaughter. Four years later, as the possibility of release from state prison moved closer, the United States indicted Smith for being a felon in possession of a handgun.
