Justice McCULLOUGH delivered the opinion of the court:

Defendant was convicted of home invasion (Ill.Rev.Stat.1991, ch. 38, par. 12-11(a)) and aggravated battery (Ill.Rev.Stat.1991, ch. 38, par. 12-4(b)(10)) following a jury trial in Macon County. He was subsequently sentenced to a term of 10 years' imprisonment for the home invasion conviction and a concurrent term of 4 years' imprisonment for the aggravated battery conviction...
