BACKGROUND AND PRIOR PROCEEDINGS

This is an appeal in a divorce action between Vernon K. Smith (Vernon) and Sharon Kay Smith (Sharon). Vernon and Sharon began living together in 1972 and were married on June 9, 1979. The parties' only child is Vernon K. Smith III, who was born on October 15, 1980. The parties separated on August 1, 1989, and Sharon filed for divorce on January 11, 1990...
