Following a jury trial in the circuit court of Cook County, defendant, Howard Wiley, was convicted of three counts of murder (Ill.Rev.Stat.1985, ch. 38, par. 9-1(b)(3)) and three counts of armed robbery (Ill.Rev. Stat.1985, ch. 38, par. 18-2(a)). The trial court determined that defendant was eligible for the death penalty on the ground that he had committed the murders during the course of the armed robberies. ...
