Hard times and the loss of the family farms in Jay County, Indiana, produced a downward spiral of more desperate and more irrational behavior by the defendant, Arnold W. Hilgeford. By 1984 he had borrowed over one million dollars from Peoples Bank and the Farmer's Home Administration (FmHA) using the two farms he owned as security for the debt. In that year financial problems engulfed the defendant and the bank foreclosed on the mortgage it held...
