Defendant Willie Ayers and Jerry Lockett were indicted for the offenses of murder and armed violence. (Ill.Rev.Stat.1985, ch. 38, pars. 9-1(a), 33A-2.) Prior to trial, the armed violence count was dropped. Additionally, Lockett's case was separated from that of defendant's.
