The plaintiffs, Paul and Sharon Bower, filed this suit, individually and on behalf of their minor daughter, Emily, a medical malpractice victim. Named as defendants were Schumpert Medical Center and Dr. Edwin Byrd, the obstetrician who delivered Emily. After settlement with Schumpert and dismissal of Dr. Byrd, the Louisiana Patient's Compensation Fund (PCF) was added to the suit.
