STATEMENT OF THE CASE

On June 30, 1988 a West Carroll Parish grand jury returned a bill of indictment charging the defendant with the first degree murder of Deputy Sheriff Jeffery Gathings. The defendant was also indicted for assisting escape, conspiracy to commit murder and conspiracy to commit aggravated escape. The defendant initially pled guilty, but subsequently changed his plea to not guilty and not guilty by reason of insanity...
