OPINION

KELLEHER, Justice.

On February 21, 1991, a Newport County jury found the defendant, Alan Amaral (Amaral), guilty of assault on a uniformed police officer, of eluding police, and of resisting arrest. Amaral was sentenced to three years to serve for the assault of the police officer, which was to run consecutively to a one-year sentence for resisting arrest.
