On February 15, 1990, defendant, Lloyd Wayne Hampton, was charged by indictment in Madison County with three counts of first degree murder (Ill.Rev.Stat.1989, ch. 38, pars. 9-1(a)(1), (a)(3)), two counts of armed violence (Ill.Rev.Stat.1989, ch. 38, par. 33A-2) and one count of home invasion (Ill.Rev.Stat.1989, ch. 38, par. 12-11).
