We entertained review of a decision of the court of appeals because it became immediately apparent to this court in the exercise of its supervisory authority that the appellate court's opinion far exceeded the bounds of appropriate appellate review.1 We therefore vacate the majority and concurring opinions of the court of appeals, 488 N.W.2d 298
