WHICHARD, Justice.

Defendant pled guilty to the first-degree murder of Jean Earnest Darter, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and conspiracy to commit murder. After his guilty pleas were entered, a jury was empaneled for the purpose of determining defendant's punishment for the first-degree murder. N.C.G.S. § 15A-2000(a) (1988).
