Justice TULLY delivered the opinion of the court:

Following a jury trial, defendant Omar Saunders was found guilty of murder, armed robbery, aggravated kidnapping and two counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault. (Ill.Rev.Stat.1987, ch. 38, pars. 9-1(a)(1), (2), (3); 12-14(a)(2); 18-2(a); 10-2(a)(3)). Saunders was sentenced to natural life imprisonment for murder with additional terms of 30 years for aggravated criminal sexual assault, 30 years for armed robbery...
