Justice STOUDER delivered the opinion of the court:

A jury found the defendant, James Michaels, guilty of home invasion, armed robbery, and aggravated battery (Ill.Rev.Stat. 1989, ch. 38, pars. 12-11(a)(2), 18-2(a), 12-4(b)(1)). The trial court entered a judgment of conviction on the aggravated battery charge, but found that it merged into the home invasion charge. The court then sentenced Michaels to two concurrent 15-year
