Defendant, James Calvin Bernard Mills, was indicted on one count of first-degree murder by a Rowan County grand jury. Defendant was tried capitally to a jury, which returned a verdict of guilty of murder in the first degree on the basis of malice, premeditation and deliberation. Following a capital sentencing proceeding pursuant to N.C.G.S. § 15A-2000, the jury recommended a sentence of life imprisonment, and the trial judge imposed judgment accordingly...
