Following a bench trial in the circuit court of Cook County, the defendant, Tyrone Strickland, was convicted of murder and of several related offenses. At a separate sentencing hearing, the trial judge found the defendant eligible for the death penalty on the ground that the murder victim was a police officer killed in the line of duty.
