In a jury trial presided over by a nonlawyer justice of the peace, petitioner Terrence Amrein was convicted of eight counts of cruelty to animals. Sentenced to serve eight consecutive jail terms of six months each and ordered to pay eight fines of $750 each, the petitioner appealed to the district court. That court affirmed.
