Raymond Renz sued Donald St. John Smith for breach of an oral employment contract between them. Renz alleged that Smith owed him $8,604.96 for the work he did for Smith in 1986 and 1987. Smith denied liability, asserting that the work for which Renz claimed payment was not done in a good and workmanlike manner when in fact it damaged his property.
