In Garcia v. Wibholm, 461 N.W.2d 166 (Iowa 1990), we explored how far a guardian ad litem had to go in defending an incarcerated civil defendant. In this certiorari proceeding, we must decide whether the district court may properly order the plaintiffs to pay, before judgment, an attorney appointed as guardian ad litem the fees and costs incurred in representing such a defendant.
