The defendant, James Washington, was convicted in a bench trial of aggravated criminal sexual assault and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment. He appealed the conviction and this court, with one justice dissenting, reversed and remanded the case because it believed defendant was denied effective assistance of counsel.
