This case began in early 1986 with the return of a twenty-eight-count indictment in which more than twenty persons, including petitioner, were charged with various narcotics offenses; petitioner, however, was charged in Counts 1, 2, 3 and 5 of the indictment only.1 On August 2, 1986, petitioner was convicted on all four counts,
